Separation from sympatric genera

All the members of this genus are rather small and have the distinctive and typical spinetail wing shape, comprising rather hooked outer primaries and bulging inner primaries and secondaries. The tail is short and square and the head protrudes almost as far as the tail, producing the classic ‘cigar with wings’ impression. White-tipped Swift (67) and some of the shorter, square-tailed members of the Cypseloides can be excluded by examining the wing shape. Flight is rapid and fluttering, often rather bat-like with rocking movements made on rather stiff, down-tilted wings (Figure 36).
